16/9/2011 - Audience Research (feedback needed)

For our short film we have been looking at film research and the audience they have aimed there film at throughout. We will choose a similar audience to both films as we believe the story lines can relate to our production. We found that James Bond: Casino Royal was given a 12a certificate whilst Irreversible was an 18 due to explicit content. However we feel that our film is quite mature compared to James Bond and gives a sense of realism similar to Irreversible. The content we are planning to film is far less explicit and therefore an age range of 15 would be acceptable to certificate our film and would be a good idea to aim for an audience close to this age.
Whilst filming and creating our short film, we will try to aim the production towards the age range of 18 – 30 that would be interested in realistic content like this. Our group feel the short film itself will be too mature and serious for a younger age and those of an older audience may take some offence. The short film is a risky project to do when releasing it to the public as we want to avoid any conflict and therefore we feel that setting the age range between 18 – 30 is another point that makes this range acceptable when creating our product.
Another reason why we would like to aim our film at a young adult audience is because we believe that most dramas with a serious outline are most appealing to those who it could relate to. Many young adults would find this film interesting due the storyline involving relationship troubles.
Whilst making our poster we will aim to create a spooky and darkened atmosphere to get the attention of a young audience who are most fascinated with dramas and crime. However we are obviously unable to include explicit images that may be sensitive to those who are quite harmed with this sort of material; therefore we will have to convey the idea of the film through images of the woman being hurt or affected by the assault.
Whilst studying film posters, we feel that something similar to the Unborn and Irreversible would be effective showing the woman on her own, revealing her vulnerability as well as her looking in the mirror as she is disgusted with herself and her effected life. This should allow people to instantly know what the poster is about after a quick glance. Our group reckon this would get the majority of attention from women as they have some relation to children as well of being aware and cautious of the dangers involving rape.
During the process of advertising our short film we will create a magazine article that will be aimed at a young adult audience. We will use language that isn’t too formal to get the message of our short film across whilst sharing the storyline effectively that a young audience will be interested in. This will include the highlights of the film such as the assault and how the woman is disgusted with herself as she is expecting a child with an unknown father. Women will be quite drawn to this from relating to both situations and therefore this would be effective topics to share so we are able to communicate and get this audience to watch our short film.

  1. Yes, I think the Unborn poster concept could be adapted to suit your film. I like the idea of her looking in the mirror. Perhaps the rapist could also be seen in the background as in the Unborn poster.

in regard to the magazine review, you need to consider where a short film review might be found. Possibly it could be in a specialist cinema magazine that has a small circulation or it might be in a film festival magazine. Sight and Sound might also review a short film.

  2. You need to make the age range for your film clearer, as I was slightly confused who 'young adults' were. Also after watching your short film, in my opinion I would consider the film as a 12a certificate because I felt there was only mild content within the sequence. A 15 certificate would contain some explicit content and mild nudity. I believe your film wouldn't of classified as a 15 certificate.

  3. I feel the unborn poster would definetly suit the sort of thing that you are trying to meet. Remember to make sure you can convey genre of the movie across within the poster, which can be easily achived with the lighting/effects and also the expression on the character's face/his or her body language. Good luck!
